Japanese Self-Defense Force Osprey Makes Emergency Landing During Joint Exercise with US

By [Your Name], Senior Journalist and Editor

A Japanese Self-Defense Force(JSDF) V-22 Osprey transport aircraft made an emergency landing at the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s (MSDF) Kanoya Air Baseon October 23, 2024, during a joint exercise with the US military. The incident, which occurred around 11:20 AM local time, raised concerns about the safety of the aircraft, which has been plagued by a history of accidents and controversies.

The Osprey, belonging to the JSDF’s Kisarazu Garrison in Chiba Prefecture, was participating inthe Keen Sword joint exercise, a large-scale annual training event involving both Japanese and American forces. The aircraft had taken off from the JSDF’s Takayuugen Sub-Base in Kumamoto Prefecture at around 8:25 AM with six personnel on board, including the pilot.

According to the Kisarazu Garrison, the aircraft’s engine oil pressure system malfunctioned, triggering a warning light. As a precautionary measure to prevent a potential accident, the crew decided to make an emergency landing at the MSDF’s Kanoya Air Base. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among the crew.

We apologize for causing concern among the local residents, said Toshihiko Hirose, the commander of the Kisarazu Garrison. We will do our utmost to ensure flight safety.

The incident comes just months after a US Air Force CV-22Osprey crashed in Japan, killing eight US Air Force Special Operations Command personnel. The crash, which occurred in November 2023, prompted the US military to ground all V-22 Osprey aircraft for a period of time. The aircraft resumed operations in March 2024.

The Osprey, known forits unique tiltrotor design that allows it to take off and land vertically like a helicopter while flying like a fixed-wing aircraft, has been a subject of controversy since its introduction. Critics have raised concerns about its safety record, citing numerous accidents and incidents, including crashes, mechanical failures, and emergency landings.

The Japanese government hasbeen a strong supporter of the Osprey, citing its versatility and capability for rapid deployment. However, the recent incident has renewed calls for a closer examination of the aircraft’s safety and reliability.

The Japanese public remains divided on the Osprey, with some expressing concerns about its safety and potential environmental impact, while others acknowledge itsmilitary capabilities. The incident has also reignited debate about the presence of US military bases in Japan, particularly in Okinawa, where the Osprey has been a source of local opposition.

The JSDF is currently investigating the cause of the engine oil pressure system malfunction. The incident is likely to prompt further scrutiny of the Osprey’s safetyrecord and raise questions about the aircraft’s long-term viability in the Japanese military.
