BRICS Leaders Meet in Russia, Call for End to Unilateral Sanctions

The BRICS summit, held in the Russian city of Kazan on October 23rd, markeda significant milestone as it was the first time the group convened after welcoming new members, including Egypt and Iran.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, addressing the summit, highlighted the group’s burgeoning influence on the global stage. We are witnessing the dynamic growth of BRICS, he stated, emphasizing the increasing authority and impact of thebloc in international affairs. Putin expressed his desire to further expand BRICS’ influence, particularly in the Global South.

The summit, themed Strengthening Multilateralism, Promoting Fair Global Development and Security, concluded with the release of theKazan Declaration. This document outlined a vision for strengthening ties between BRICS and other nations, advocating for the establishment of BRICS Partner Countries.

In a move reflecting the current geopolitical landscape, the declaration explicitly called for the elimination of unilateraleconomic sanctions that violate international law. This call comes amid the ongoing sanctions imposed on Russia by Western nations following its military incursion into Ukraine.

While the summit focused on strengthening cooperation and promoting a multipolar world, it also underscored the internal challenges facing the BRICS bloc. In May, tensions arose between China and Brazil overtheir differing positions on the Ukraine conflict. This internal discord highlights the complexities of maintaining unity within the group, particularly as global power dynamics shift.

The BRICS summit in Kazan has undoubtedly served as a platform for the group to assert its growing influence and advocate for a more equitable global order. However, the declaration’s callfor an end to unilateral sanctions, coupled with the internal tensions surrounding the Ukraine conflict, suggests that the group faces significant challenges in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape.
