Starburst Operating System Kernel Goes Open Source: Rust Language Aims for Performanceand Security

Beijing, China – On October 22nd,the Starburst (Asterinas) open-source system software stack, focusing on secure and trustworthy underlying technologies, was jointly released by Zhongguancun Laboratory, Ant Group, Peking University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and other industry-academia-research institutions. The software stack is now open to global developers.

Starburst comprises two key projects: Starburst OS and Starburst Confidential Computing. Starburst OS targets general execution environments, while Starburst Confidential Computing focuses on trusted execution environments. Together, they provide secure and native system software, building a secureand trustworthy foundation for cloud computing, data secure circulation, artificial intelligence, and other critical computing scenarios.

At the launch event, Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Ni Guangnan stated in his speech: In recent years, global system security vulnerabilitieshave been frequent, and incidents of cyberattacks and black-grey industries have occurred frequently. Traditional technical routes are difficult to effectively address new security challenges. Secure and trustworthy new technologies have become key to promoting sustainable industrial development and continuous technological innovation. At the same time, as artificial intelligence technology is deeply implemented in industries, ensuringsecure data circulation requires the support of a secure and reliable system software stack.

One of the major technical challenges in the operating system field is the difficulty in balancing security and performance. Current mainstream commercial and open-source operating systems are developed based on traditional, non-memory-safe C language. The system complexity has exploded, and high-risk security vulnerabilities erupt every now and then. A significant portion of these vulnerabilities are caused by memory safety issues.

Starburst OS is an industrial-grade open-source operating system kernel that balances performance and security. It adopts the emerging Rust programming language and pioneers a microkernel OS architecture, minimizing theattack surface. Rust’s memory safety guarantees effectively prevent memory-related vulnerabilities, significantly enhancing the security of the system.

The adoption of Rust in Starburst OS is a significant step towards building a more secure and reliable operating system, said a spokesperson from Zhongguancun Laboratory. We believe that this open-sourceproject will attract a large community of developers and contribute to the development of a new generation of secure and trustworthy computing systems.

The open-sourcing of Starburst OS marks a significant milestone in the development of secure and trustworthy operating systems. It is expected to attract a large community of developers and contribute to the development of a newgeneration of secure and trustworthy computing systems.
