BRICS Mechanism Promotes a More Just and Equitable International Order: Interview with Azerbaijan’sForeign Policy Chief
Baku, Azerbaijan, October 22, 2024 – Hikmat Hajiyev, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, recently expressed his belief that the BRICSmechanism is a vital force in promoting a more just and equitable international order. In an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency, Hajiyev emphasized the BRICS’ role inadvocating for a more diverse and democratic system of international relations.
The world today is characterized by intertwined turmoil and global challenges that demand global solutions, Hajiyev stated. Azerbaijan consistently advocates for international cooperation as the most practical approach to addressingthese challenges. He highlighted the BRICS mechanism as a crucial platform for the Global South to unite and amplify its voice, thereby enhancing its representation and influence in international affairs.
Hajiyev emphasized the BRICS’ commitment to fostering fair and mutually beneficial partnershipsbetween nations. He lauded the mechanism’s three-pronged approach to cooperation encompassing political security, economic and financial affairs, and cultural exchange. This comprehensive framework, he noted, holds immense potential for growth.
The BRICS member states each possess unique strengths, Hajiyev said. By leveraging thesestrengths collectively, they can benefit the entire world. He stressed that a unipolar world is not sustainable, emphasizing the BRICS’ emergence as a significant force on the global stage. We believe that the BRICS nations have immense potential to contribute to the establishment of a new world order based on justice, international law, and equalityamong nations, he added.
Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join the BRICS mechanism during the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in July. On August 20th, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally submitted its application.
Hajiyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s strategic location at the crossroads of East and West, emphasizing its consistent efforts to act as a bridge and corridor. Azerbaijan is a staunch supporter of multilateralism and equal dialogue between nations, he said. We are eager to collaborate closely with other like-minded countries to contribute to the construction of apeaceful and just multipolar world.
He underscored the strong partnership between Azerbaijan and China, noting that Azerbaijan was one of the first countries to endorse the Belt and Road Initiative. This year, the two nations elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership. Expanding cooperation with China is one of the top priorities of Azerbaijan’s foreignpolicy, Hajiyev affirmed. The two countries are currently engaged in robust collaboration across political, economic, cultural, and transportation sectors.
Hajiyev concluded by emphasizing the importance of the BRICS mechanism in shaping a more just and equitable international order. He reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to working with other nations to achievethis goal, further solidifying its role as a bridge between East and West.
