Japan’s Empress Emerita Celebrates 90th Birthday Amidst Recovery
Tokyo, Japan – Empress Emerita Michiko of Japan celebrated her 90th birthday on October 20th, a milestone marked by both personal reflection and ongoing recovery from recent health challenges.
According to the Imperial Household Agency,the Empress Emerita has been diligently maintaining her health while enjoying a peaceful life with Emperor Emeritus Akihito. However, she contracted COVID-19 in Juneand suffered a femoral fracture after a fall at the Togu Palace in Tokyo’s Akasaka district on October 6th. She underwent surgery and has since made a steady recovery.
Post-surgery, the Empress Emerita has beenusing a wheelchair and engaging in approximately one hour of daily rehabilitation exercises, including walking training, in the mornings and afternoons.
Despite her own health concerns, the Empress Emerita remains deeply attentive to the Emperor Emeritus’ well-being, frequentlyinquiring about his health and offering him care. However, the Emperor Emeritus has expressed concern about the Empress Emerita’s stamina, often asking, Are you alright?
