North Korea Sends 1,500 Troops to Support Russia in Ukraine War: South Korean Intelligence

Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean National IntelligenceService (NIS) has revealed that North Korea has decided to deploy approximately 12,000 troops, including special forces, to assist Russia in itsongoing war in Ukraine. The first contingent of 1,500 soldiers has already arrived in Russia, according to the NIS.

This revelation, reported byYonhap News Agency on October 18, 2024, marks a significant escalation in the already strained relationship between North Korea and the West. The deployment of troops comes amidst growing concerns about Pyongyang’s deepening ties with Moscow.

The NIS claims that North Korea’s decision to send troops is part of a broader military cooperation agreement with Russia, which was solidified in June 2024 with the signing of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty. Thistreaty, according to the NIS, has paved the way for increased military exchanges and joint operations between the two countries.

The NIS has been monitoring North Korea’s military activities closely since August, when they observed Kim Jong-sik, a senior official responsible for North Korea’s missile program, making multiple trips to theUkrainian frontlines. This observation, coupled with the recent troop deployment, suggests that North Korea is actively involved in supporting Russia’s military efforts.

The implications of this development are far-reaching. The deployment of North Korean troops could potentially escalate the conflict in Ukraine and further strain relations between Russia and the West. Additionally,it raises concerns about the potential for North Korea to utilize the conflict to advance its own military capabilities and acquire advanced weaponry from Russia.

The international community is closely watching this situation unfold, with many expressing concerns about the potential for the conflict to spill over into the region and beyond. The United States and its allies have condemned North Korea’s actions and called for an immediate cessation of military support for Russia.
