Taiwan Hit by 5.2 Magnitude Earthquake off Hualien Coast
Taipei, Taiwan – A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan on October 16th at 9:58 PM local time, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).The tremor was felt across multiple counties and cities throughout the island.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 8.9 kilometers northeast of the Hualien Countygovernment, at a depth of 25.2 kilometers. The CWB reported that the strongest shaking, measured on the Taiwan Seismic Intensity Scale, was felt in Hualien County and Yilan County.
The earthquake caused no immediatereports of damage or injuries. However, residents across Taiwan took to social media to share their experiences of the shaking, with many describing it as a sudden jolt or brief but noticeable tremor.
Taiwan is located in a seismically activeregion, situated on the boundary of the Eurasian and Philippine Sea tectonic plates. The island experiences frequent earthquakes, with several occurring each year. While most earthquakes are minor and cause no significant damage, larger tremors can pose a serious threat to infrastructure and public safety.
Following the earthquake, the CWB urged residents to remain vigilant and takenecessary precautions in case of aftershocks. The agency also advised the public to stay informed about earthquake safety measures and to be prepared for potential emergencies.
