Multiple Provinces in China Tighten Eligibility Requirements for 2025 CollegeEntrance Exam

Beijing, October 15, 2024– As the registration period for the 2025 National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) commences across China, several provinces have implemented stricter eligibilitychecks, aiming to curb the phenomenon of Gaokao migration.

Provinces including Beijing, Shanghai, Hunan, Anhui, Fujian, and Guangxi have all begun accepting applications for the 2025 Gaokao. Notably, many provinces have announced the discontinuation of supplementary registration for the exam, effective from 2025 onwards. This move seeks to streamline theregistration process and prevent last-minute applications.

Simultaneously, these provinces have emphasized the importance of rigorous eligibility verification. This includes stringent checks on residency requirements and educational history, aimed at preventing individuals from registering for the Gaokao in provinces where they arenot legally entitled to do so. This practice, known as Gaokao migration, involves students relocating to provinces with perceived easier entrance exams, often for the purpose of gaining an advantage in the highly competitive college admissions process.

The stricter eligibility requirements reflect the Chinese government’s commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in theGaokao system. By tightening regulations and eliminating loopholes, authorities aim to create a level playing field for all students, regardless of their place of residence.

The Gaokao, a standardized test administered annually, is considered the most important exam in China. It serves as the primary criterion for university admissions, making it ahigh-stakes event for millions of students nationwide. The exam’s significance and the intense competition it generates have led to concerns about unfair practices, including Gaokao migration, which authorities are now actively addressing.

The implementation of these stricter measures is expected to have a significant impact on the Gaokao landscape. It remains to be seen how effectively these measures will curb Gaokao migration and promote a more equitable and transparent college admissions system.
