Chengdu Tightens Grip on Online Content in September 2024

Chengdu, China – The Chengdu Municipal Internet Information Office (CMIO) hasstepped up its efforts to regulate online content in September 2024, focusing on both app and website oversight and addressing user complaints. This proactive approach aims toensure a safe and healthy online environment for residents.

App Audits Reveal Concerns

The CMIO conducted audits on 25 local apps, revealing that 21of them fell short in their content review processes. This highlights the ongoing challenge of ensuring responsible content management within the rapidly evolving app landscape. While the specific issues identified were not detailed in the report, the CMIO’s emphasis on user registrationinformation suggests potential concerns regarding user privacy and data security.

Website Crackdown Targets Illegal Content

The CMIO also scrutinized over 15,000 websites, resulting in the closure of 12 for illegal activities. Of these, 11 were identified as gambling sites, while one was flagged for hosting explicit content. This proactive crackdown demonstrates the CMIO’s commitment to combating online activities that violate Chinese law.

Robust Complaint System

The CMIO’s report also highlights the effectiveness of its online complaint system.In September, the platform received 93,601 complaints from users regarding various issues, including pornography, gambling, copyright infringement, and false information. Of these, 384 were received directly through the CMIO platform, with 22 deemed valid and successfully addressed. The remaining 93,217complaints were received through local website platforms, resulting in 38,066 successful resolutions.

The CMIO encourages citizens to actively participate in online governance by reporting any illegal or harmful content. The report concludes by emphasizing the importance of a collaborative approach to maintaining a clean andsafe online environment.
