China and Iran Pledge to Strengthen Ties Amid Regional Tensions

BEIJING – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, held a phone call on October 14, 2024, expressing their commitment to deepening bilateral relations amid escalating tensions in theMiddle East.

During the conversation, both sides lauded the current state of China-Iran relations, emphasizing their intention to maintain high-level exchanges and advance practical cooperation.

Amir-Abdollahian expressed Iran’s deep concern over the potential for a full-blown conflict in the region, stating that Tehran does not wish to see the situation escalate further. He underscored Iran’s high regard for China’s significant influence on the international stage and expressed a willingness to enhance communication and coordination with Beijing to de-escalate the situation through diplomatic means.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also urged Israel to refrain from any actions that could further inflamethe situation.

This phone call comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, with Israel and Iran engaged in a shadow war, marked by a series of attacks and counter-attacks.

China has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, calling for restraint from all parties involved. Beijing has also been actively involved indiplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region, including its role in the nuclear deal with Iran.

The call between Wang and Amir-Abdollahian underscores the growing strategic partnership between China and Iran, which has deepened in recent years, particularly in the face of US sanctions and pressure.

The two countries have beencollaborating on a range of projects, including infrastructure development, energy cooperation, and trade.

The call also highlights China’s increasing role in regional affairs, particularly in the Middle East, where it has been seeking to expand its influence and promote its own vision for a multipolar world.
