Netherlands to Add RSV Vaccination to National Program in Autumn 2025
The Netherlands willexpand its National Vaccination Program to include the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)jab, starting in autumn 2025. This decision, announced by the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sports, aims to bolster the country’s defenses against this common respiratory illness, particularly among infants.
The RSV vaccine will be offered to all babies in their first year of life. This proactive approachis driven by the significant impact RSV can have on young children, leading to bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and even hospitalization in severe cases.
“It is important that we protect children well against various infectious diseases,” stated the Minister of PublicHealth, Welfare and Sports. “That is why I am pleased that we can now offer this important vaccine to all babies.”
The decision follows extensive research and consultations with healthcare professionals and experts at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The RIVM has been instrumental in evaluating the effectiveness and safety of the RSV vaccine, paving the way for its inclusion in the national program.
This move aligns with global trends towards expanding vaccination programs to combat preventable diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also recognized the importance of RSV vaccination, particularly in vulnerable populations.
