KDE Plasma 6.1: A Good One on the Horizon

KDE Plasma 6.1, slated for release in just over a week, is shaping up to be a significant update according to prominent KDE developer Nate Graham. In his latest weekly development summary, Graham highlights a range of new features, performanceenhancements, and bug fixes that promise to make this release a good one for users.

One of the key improvements is the System Monitor’s ability togather CPU, memory, and I/O data from the /proc/pressure directory. This change allows for more accurate and detailed system monitoring, providing users with a deeper understanding of their system’s performance.

Another notable addition isa warning in the settings dialog when using an NVIDIA GPU on X11 with a floating panel and adaptive panel transparency. This warning alerts users to potential lag issues when moving or resizing windows, a known bug in the NVIDIA driver.

KDE Plasma6.1 also boasts improvements to the custom accent color feature. The new implementation ensures better color selection for links, enhancing readability and visual appeal.

For enhanced security and authentication, Plasma 6.1 introduces support for WebAuth for SAML-based authentication within the Plasma Networks widget. This feature streamlines the authentication processfor users accessing services that require SAML authentication.

Beyond new features, Plasma 6.1 addresses several critical bugs. A KWin crash that occurred when the system woke from sleep with weird screens that turn on strangely has been fixed. Additionally, the release promises improved performance across the board, with Graham stating thatbasically everything has seen performance enhancements.

With its impressive array of new features, bug fixes, and performance improvements, KDE Plasma 6.1 is poised to deliver a more robust, user-friendly, and visually appealing desktop experience. Users can look forward to a release that addresses key pain points and enhances the overallusability of the KDE Plasma desktop.
