The Next Decade: Reflections on the Future of the Pucun Literary Group

Ten years ago, the Pucun Literary Group was born in the heart ofBeijing’s migrant worker community. This past September, the group celebrated its anniversary with an exhibition and a lively discussion on its future. The event, aptly titled The Next Decade: New Worker Literature, Creation and Future, brought together members, volunteers, donors, and friends to reflect on the past and chart acourse for the future.

The Pucun Literary Group has been a beacon of hope and creativity for migrant workers in Beijing, providing a platform for them to express themselves through writing and storytelling. The group’s anniversary event was a testament toits enduring impact. During the discussion, members shared their hopes and dreams for the group’s future.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Several key themes emerged from the discussion. Many members, like Xu Huaiyuan, expresseda desire to continue learning and growing as writers. They recognized the need to hone their skills and transform their personal experiences into compelling narratives. Xu, who has lived in the Zhonglou area for a decade, has already begun to do this, writing articles about his life in the neighborhood and even winning awards for hiswork.

Others, like Ma Dayong, emphasized the importance of staying true to the group’s core values of artistic purity and authenticity. For Ma, the act of creating art should be a pure expression of the soul, free from external pressures or expectations.

The sentiment of perseverance was also prevalent.苑伟, a member of the group, simply stated, I have nothing to say, but I will definitely continue in the next ten years! This unwavering commitment to the group’s mission was echoed by others, highlighting the deep sense of community and purpose that binds the members together.

Looking Ahead:New Challenges and Opportunities

While the group celebrates its past achievements, it also faces new challenges in the coming years. As members like Xiao Hai pointed out, finding a balance between personal aspirations and the group’s goals will be crucial. Xiao, who arrived in Beijing from a southern factory in 2016, expressed a desire to find a partner and continue writing, highlighting the importance of individual growth within the collective.

The group also faces the challenge of expanding its reach and impact. Ma Jiandong, who has been actively involved in filmmaking, highlighted the potential of using different mediums to share stories. He has already produced several plays based on his own experiences and those of other migrant workers, demonstrating the power of storytelling to connect with audiences beyond the group itself.

The Pucun Literary Group’s journey over the past decade has been one of resilience, creativity, and community. As the group embarks on itsnext chapter, its members are committed to continuing to share their stories and inspire others. The future of the group is bright, filled with the promise of new voices, new stories, and a continued commitment to empowering migrant workers through the power of literature.
