Taobao 88VIP Membership Surges, Live Streaming Booms Ahead ofDouble 11
Hangzhou, China – Taobao,Alibaba’s dominant e-commerce platform, announced a significant surge in its 88VIP membership program and a robust growth in live streaming revenue, setting the stage fora massive Double 11 shopping festival.
During the 2024 Double 11 launch event, Taobao Group revealed that its88VIP program has experienced consistent double-digit growth over the past year. Notably, the number of Gen Z users (born after 2000) has increased by a staggering 67%, pushing the total membership count beyond 42million.
The platform’s live streaming segment also witnessed impressive growth. Taobao Live’s Quarterly Active Customers (QAC) surged by 56% year-on-year, while Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) saw a 25% increase. These figures highlight the increasing popularity of live streaming as a shopping channel on Taobao.
Further bolstering Taobao’s momentum, the platform’s Billions of Subsidies program has seen a remarkable surge in active users. As of now, the program boasts over 500 million active usersannually, showcasing its success in attracting bargain-hunters.
Ru Ci, General Manager of Taobao’s Billions of Subsidies program, revealed that the program’s transaction volume has skyrocketed this year. The number of participating merchants has doubled, and over 100,000individual products have surpassed 10 million yuan in sales.
In a statement, Jialuo, Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of Tmall, emphasized the unprecedented scale of Taobao and Tmall’s investment in this year’s Double 11. The platform will distribute 300 billionyuan in consumer coupons and red envelopes, offering discounts of up to 80% on millions of branded products through the Billions of Subsidies program.
This aggressive strategy underscores Taobao’s commitment to capturing a larger share of the lucrative Double 11 market, a shopping event that has becomea global phenomenon. The platform’s focus on membership programs, live streaming, and deep discounts suggests a concerted effort to attract and retain customers in an increasingly competitive e-commerce landscape.
