MediaTek Dimensity 9400: A Performance Leap with Lower Power Consumption
MediaTek has officially launched its new flagship chip, the Dimensity 9400, boasting a 15% IPC improvement and a 40% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor. We got our hands on a testdevice equipped with this chip to see how it performs in real-world scenarios.
Theoretical Performance: High Scores Don’t Always Mean High Frequencies
The Dimensity 9400 is built on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, making it the first Android chip to utilize this advanced technology. With a staggering 29.1 billion transistors, the chipfeatures a second-generation all-core architecture, including the latest Cortex-X925 super core clocked at 3.62GHz.
Instead of simply increasing the clock speed, MediaTek has significantly boosted the core cache capacity. The L2 cache has been doubled, reaching 2MB for the super core, while the L3 cache has increased by 50% to 12MB.
SVE2 instruction set support plays a crucial role in enhancing performance while reducing power consumption. This set adds multiple instructions optimized for computer vision, 5G, and multimedia acceleration, enabling the Dimensity 9400 to achieve higher efficiency in various computations. Consequently, the device spends more time in an idle state, minimizing overall power consumption.
In Geekbench 6 benchmarks, the Dimensity 9400 scored 2956 in single-core and a remarkable 9242 in multi-core. Compared to the Dimensity 9300, this represents a 34% increase in single-core and a 22% improvement in multi-core performance.
The Dimensity 9400 alsosurpasses the Dimensity 9300 by approximately 28% in the popular AnTuTu benchmark, reaching a score of 2.81 million. The GPU sub-score shows the most significant improvement, close to 40%, highlighting a substantial performance gain.
Gaming Performance: Smooth Frameswith Low Power Consumption
In terms of GPU, the Dimensity 9400 features a 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, offering a 41% peak performance increase and a 44% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor.
In the Manhattan offscreen 3.1 benchmark, the Dimensity 9400 achieved an impressive 382 frames. In the more demanding Aztec 1440P offscreen benchmark, the Dimensity 9400 reached a remarkable 128 frames, significantly surpassing the Dimensity 9300’s score of 99 frames.
