媽祖信俗 Celebrates 15 Years as UNESCO Intangible CulturalHeritage: A Millennial Tradition Shining on the World Stage

湄洲島, Fujian Province, China – On October 11th, 2024, the 媽祖信俗 (Mazu Belief)marked its 15th anniversary as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. This momentous occasion serves as a testament to the enduring power of this ancient tradition,which has resonated across generations and continents for over a millennium.

The Mazu belief, centered around the worship of the sea goddess Mazu, originated in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) on the island ofMeizhou, located off the coast of Fujian Province. Mazu, revered as the protector of seafarers and fishermen, has become a symbol of hope, safety, and prosperity for millions across China and the diaspora.

Over thecenturies, the Mazu belief has spread far beyond its origins, reaching Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia, and even parts of the United States. Today, Mazu temples stand as vibrant centers of community and faith, attracting devotees from all walks of life.

Mazu culture, a tradition spanning athousand years, shines brightly on the world stage. To date, over two million Mazu devotees from around the globe have returned to the ancestral temple on Meizhou Island to pay homage and offer incense, said a spokesperson for the Meizhou Mazu Temple.

The inscription of the 媽祖信俗 onto UNESCO’sIntangible Cultural Heritage List in 2009 was a significant recognition of the tradition’s cultural and historical importance. It highlighted the belief’s role in fostering social cohesion, promoting cultural exchange, and preserving traditional values.

The 15th anniversary celebrations on Meizhou Island included a series of events,including traditional performances, cultural exhibitions, and religious ceremonies. The festivities drew large crowds of devotees, eager to pay their respects to the sea goddess and celebrate the enduring legacy of the Mazu belief.

Beyond its religious significance, the Mazu belief has also had a profound impact on Chinese culture and society. The tradition hasinspired countless works of art, literature, and music, and has played a vital role in shaping the cultural identity of coastal communities.
