Spruce Pine,North Carolina – A critical source of high-purity quartz used in semiconductor manufacturinghas resumed operations following the devastating Hurricane Helene. Sibelco, one of the companies mining the specialized quartz in Spruce Pine, announced the resumption of production and shipmentsin a press release on Thursday.
The company stated that operations are gradually returning to full capacity, a significant relief for the global semiconductor industry, which reliesheavily on the unique quartz found in Spruce Pine.
Hurricane Helene, which swept through parts of North Carolina earlier this month, caused widespread flooding, mudslides, and power outages. Sibelco, along with other quartz mining companies inthe area, temporarily suspended operations in the wake of the storm.
While the company initially reported minor damage and confirmed the safety of its employees, the disruption raised concerns about potential supply chain disruptions. Spruce Pine is home to theworld’s only naturally occurring quartz deposit with the purity required for direct use in chip manufacturing. Experts had warned that any interruption to the mining operations could significantly impact the supply of chips used in smartphones, computers, solar panels, and other essential devices.
Quartz Corporation, another company mining high-purity quartz in Spruce Pine, also halted operations on September 26th. However, both companies assured the industry that existing stockpiles and finished goods within the supply chain would prevent any critical situations in the short term.
