Xi Jinping Encourages Elderly Volunteers to Contribute to China’s Modernization

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) — In a letter torepresentatives of the Silver Age Action elderly volunteer program, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his appreciation for their contributions and urged them to continue playing an active role insociety. The letter was sent on the eve of China’s traditional Double Ninth Festival, a day dedicated to honoring the elderly.

For many years,you have actively participated in volunteer service activities, using your knowledge and experience to serve the grassroots and the people, transmitting positive energy to society, and showcasing the spirit of China’s elderly in the new era, Xi wrote.

He emphasized thatthe elderly are a valuable asset to the Party and the country. I hope that all elderly friends will maintain a healthy mindset and a spirit of perseverance, striving to live a fulfilling life while also contributing their skills and experience to the advancement of China’s modernization, Xi said.

Xi urged all levels of government to prioritize aging work, focusing on addressing the concerns and difficulties faced by the elderly. He called for the implementation of comprehensive policies and the creation of a favorable social environment to ensure that the elderly receive adequate care, have opportunities to contribute, and enjoy the protectionof their rights.

The Silver Age Action program was launched in 2003 by the National Committee on Aging to mobilize senior experts and professors to support underdeveloped regions. To date, over 7 million elderly volunteers have participated in the program, undertaking over 4,000 assistance projects. The Silver AgeAction has become a significant platform for promoting the active engagement of the elderly.

Recently, representatives of the Silver Age Action elderly volunteers wrote to Xi, reporting on their volunteer service experiences and expressing their determination to continue utilizing their expertise to serve society and contribute to the advancement of China’s modernization.
