HarmonyOS NEXT: A Step Forward, But Not Without Limitations

Huawei’slatest operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT, has officially launched for select devices, including the Mate60 series, Mate X5, and MatePad Pro 13.2. While the public beta program has been met with enthusiasm, a recently releasedsupport list for the system’s Smart Interconnection feature reveals some notable omissions.

The Smart Interconnection feature, which aims to seamlessly integrateHuawei phones and computers, offers a range of functionalities, including Nearby Discovery, Super Terminal, Single-Window Screen Projection, and Reverse Control. However, the list highlights several key features that are currently unsupported, including:

  • Scan Code Discovery: This feature allows users to discover nearby devices by scanning a QR code, simplifying the connection process.
  • One-Click Reconnection: This feature enables quick re-establishment of a connection between devices, eliminating the need for manual re-pairing.
  • Multi-Window Split-Screen: This feature allows users to view and interact with multiple applications simultaneously on their computer screen.
  • Large Window in Landscape Mode: This feature provides a larger display area for applications when using a computer in landscape mode.
  • Call Handling: This feature allows users to answer and manage phone calls directly from their computer.
  • Distributed Unlock: This feature allows users to unlock their computer using their phone.
  • Backup Video/Photos: This feature allows users to easily backup their videos and photos to their computer.
  • One-Click Hotspot: This feature allows users to quickly create a Wi-Fi hotspot from their phone.
  • View Files: This feature allows users to access and manage files stored on their phone from their computer.
  • One-Touch Transfer: This feature allows users to easily transfer files between their phone and computer.
  • Cross-Device Clipboard: This feature allows users to copy and paste text and images between their phone and computer.
  • File Continuation: This feature allows users to seamlessly continue working on a file on their computer after starting it on their phone.
  • Recent Documents: This feature allows users to access recently opened documents from theirphone on their computer.
  • Right-Click Send to Phone: This feature allows users to easily send files from their computer to their phone.
  • Relay Station: This feature allows users to send files to their phone via a computer.
  • Smart Search: This feature allows users to search for informationacross their phone and computer.

While the absence of these features might be a disappointment for some users, Huawei’s decision to prioritize certain functionalities could be a strategic move. The company may be focusing on core features that are essential for a smooth and efficient user experience, while leaving room for future updates and enhancements.

Thecurrent Smart Interconnection feature list provides a glimpse into the evolving capabilities of HarmonyOS NEXT. As the system continues to develop, it will be interesting to see which features are added and how Huawei continues to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop experiences.
