Beijing, October 9, 2024 – TheBeijing No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court has witnessed a significant increase in the number and types of disputes involving the elderly since 2020.The court has adjudicated a total of 1,428 civil cases related to elderly care and support. Among these cases, contract disputes account forthe largest proportion (34.48%), while guardianship disputes represent the smallest (0.19%). This trend underscores the growing need for a more robust legal framework to safeguard the rights of senior citizens.

The data released by thecourt reveals a complex picture of the challenges faced by the elderly in Beijing. Contract disputes, which involve issues like property ownership, inheritance, and financial agreements, are the most prevalent. This suggests a growing concern among seniors about their financial security and thepotential for exploitation in their later years.

The relatively low number of guardianship disputes, while seemingly positive, may reflect a lack of awareness about the legal options available to protect vulnerable elderly individuals.
