流浪地球 Script Supervisor Wang Hongwei: I Hope Science Fiction LiteratureWon’t Be Bound by Science Fiction Films

Chengdu, China – Wang Hongwei, the script supervisor for the Wandering Earth series, Crazy Alien, and Crazy Stone, among other films, is aman of many hats. He is also a producer for films like Hi, Mom, The Novelist, Cosmic Exploration Editorial Department, and Return to theWorld, a professor at Beijing Film Academy, and a judge for the 35th Galaxy Awards.

Recently, during an interview with Cover News at the 35th Galaxy Awards ceremony in Chengdu, Wang shared his unique perspective on filmand science fiction.

From Science Fiction Literature to Science Fiction Film: Maintaining Creative Purity

While Wang is primarily known for his work in film, he also teaches at Beijing Film Academy. He observes that younger generations are increasingly drawn toand engaged with science fiction.

Regarding the adaptation of science fiction literature into film, Wang states, Science fiction films may require works with particularly strong and clear genre elements to be adapted. However, I personally prefer science fiction literature that presents novel settings or concepts, even if the concepts aren’t entirely new,as long as they are closely intertwined with the story and characters.

Wang believes that a work can only be considered science fiction if its theme cannot be conveyed through any other genre.

In recent years, numerous film adaptations of science fiction literature have entered the public eye. However, Wang hopes that science fiction literature willremain uninfluenced by film adaptations and maintain its inherent purity and uniqueness.

I dislike writers who write solely for the purpose of selling their IP, Wang says. This can stifle their creative freedom. Film adaptation is our job as filmmakers; writers shouldn’t be bound by it.

Chinese Science Fiction Film: Just Beginning, Still Developing

Regarding the Tianfu Science Fiction Film Festival, Wang believes that science fiction film in China is still in its infancy. Therefore, current science fiction film festivals primarily serve as a catalyst for development rather than a platform for summarizing and analyzing the genre.

We need to develop science fictionliterature, film, animation, and offline events to propel the entire science fiction industry forward, he says.

Science fiction film is gradually developing in China, and Wang Hongwei’s insights offer a valuable perspective on the future of this burgeoning genre. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining creative purity in science fiction literature and fostering athriving ecosystem for the development of the entire science fiction industry.
