630,000 Items From Chinese Online Shopping Platforms Blocked atKorean Customs

Seoul, South Korea – Over the past two years,a staggering 630,000 items purchased by South Korean consumers through Chinese online shopping platforms have been denied entry into the country, according to data released by theKorea Customs Service on October 5th.

The data reveals a significant trend of blocked goods, accounting for 82% of the total 772,000 items denied entry between 2022 and July 2024. This surge in blocked items highlights growing concerns about the safety and legality of goods imported from China through online platforms.

The number of blocked itemshas been steadily increasing, with 222,000 items denied entry in 2022, followed by 224,000 in 2023, and 188,000 inthe first seven months of 2024.

The primary reasons for blocking these items include discrepancies between the declared product names and the actual contents, exceeding the permitted quantity, containing items subject to quarantine regulations, violating intellectual property laws, and posing a threat to public safety due to the presence of narcotics, firearms,or other dangerous goods.

The most common reason for blocking items was a mismatch between the declared product name and the actual contents, accounting for 249,000 items. This suggests a potential issue with fraudulent practices or inaccurate product descriptions on Chinese online platforms.

The second most common reason, with 193,000 blocked items, was the presence of goods subject to quarantine regulations. This highlights the need for stricter import controls to prevent the introduction of potentially harmful organisms or diseases.

The blocking of 175,000 items for violating intellectual property laws points to a significant issue with counterfeit goodsbeing sold through Chinese online platforms. This practice not only harms legitimate businesses but also poses risks to consumers who may be purchasing inferior or unsafe products.

Finally, the blocking of 17,000 items due to their dangerous nature underscores the importance of vigilant customs inspections to prevent the entry of illegal substances and weapons.

Thegrowing number of blocked items from Chinese online shopping platforms raises concerns about the effectiveness of existing import controls and the need for stricter regulations to protect consumers and national security.
