Dutch Giants Philips and Ahold Fund Election Deniers in US Congress

Amsterdam, Netherlands- A new report reveals that Dutch multinational corporations Philips and Ahold Delhaizehave donated to 26 U.S. Congress members who deny the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. The findings, published by Dutchnews outlet NRC in collaboration with the Amsterdam-based organization Donations and Democracy, raise concerns about the influence of corporate donations on American democracy.

The report, basedon an analysis of donation data from the ten largest Dutch companies operating in the United States, highlights a troubling trend. Philips and Ahold Delhaize, both major players in the American market, have contributed to the campaigns of politicians who haveactively spread misinformation about the 2020 election. These donations, totaling an undisclosed amount, have been channeled through political action committees (PACs) associated with these companies.

This is a serious issue, said Christopher Avery, aresearcher at Donations and Democracy. These companies are essentially funding politicians who are undermining the democratic process. It’s a clear conflict of interest, and it raises questions about the integrity of our elections.

The report identifies several key figures who received donations from Philips and Ahold Delhaize, including:

  • Representative [Name], a Republican from [State], who has repeatedly made false claims about election fraud.
  • Representative [Name], a Republican from [State], who voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election.
  • Representative [Name], a Republican from [State],who has actively promoted the Big Lie about the election.

The revelations come at a time when American democracy is facing unprecedented challenges. The spread of misinformation and disinformation, coupled with the increasing influence of corporate money in politics, has eroded public trust in government institutions.

This report should serve as a wake-up call for both Dutch companies and American voters, said Avery. We need to hold corporations accountable for their political contributions and demand greater transparency in campaign finance.

Philips and Ahold Delhaize have yet to respond to the report’s findings.

This issue is likely to attract further scrutiny in the comingweeks and months, as it raises crucial questions about the role of corporations in shaping American politics.
