Apple is reportedly gearing up to enter the smart home market with a bang, with a new operating system called homeOS and two intriguing devices slated for release next year. This news comes from Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg reporter known for his reliable Apple scoops.

The most significant product in development, codenamed J595,is described as a desktop device featuring a large iPad-like display and mechanical limbs. This device, while still in early stages, hints at Apple’s ambition to push beyond traditional smart home devices and into more interactive and potentially robotic territory.

Alongside J595, a lower-end smart display, codenamed J490, is also in the works. This device, expected to launch as early as next year, will primarily focus on FaceTime communication and home appliance control. It’s envisioned as a more affordable companion to the robotic device and is rumored to be priced at over $1000.

Both J490 and J595 will be powered by Apple Intelligence, a new AI platform designed to bring Apple-branded AI into the home. Thismarks a significant shift for Apple, as its current home appliances like Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod mini lack the hardware necessary to run AI models on-device.

The new devices will run on the aforementioned homeOS, a system that follows Apple’s established pattern of dedicated operating systems for each major hardwarecategory. This new OS will likely be based on tvOS, the system currently powering Apple TV. Gurman predicts that tvOS and homeOS will eventually merge, running on all Apple home devices.

Functionally, J490 is designed to run applications like Calendar, Notes, and Home, offering a userinterface for controlling home appliances and quickly accessing information. Early prototypes explored the possibility of magnetically attaching the device to walls or placing it on tables.

Apple’s foray into the smart home market is a significant development, particularly with the rumored inclusion of advanced AI capabilities. These new devices, coupled with the homeOS platform, could revolutionize how we interact with our homes and redefine the boundaries of smart home technology.
