AMD Bets Big on AI: Lisa Su Declares Supercycle Just Beginning, Promises Accelerated Chip Rollout
AMD CEO Lisa Su has declared that theartificial intelligence (AI) supercycle has only just begun, and the company is doubling down on its commitment to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the high-performance AIchip market.
Speaking at a Goldman Sachs conference on Monday, Su said, AI is a bigger cycle than I expected five years ago, and we’re making big bets for the next five years.
AMD’s Accelerated AI Chip Roadmap
Just nine months after the successful launch of its MI300x, AMD is already planning a rapid succession of new MI-series chips. The company will officially launch its MI325 AI chip later this year, followed by the MI350 in 2025 and the MI400 in 2026. This aggressive timeline reflects AMD’s ambition to directly challenge Nvidia’s market leadership.
Su revealed that the next generation of MI-series chips will boast an impressive 192GB of memory and a staggering 153 billion transistors. This powerful memory capacity will enable AMD’s AI chips to be used for training large language models(LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
While Nvidia currently holds a commanding position in the AI chip market, AMD is rapidly catching up. We’ve accelerated our AI roadmap and are releasing new products on a yearly cycle, Su stated. This is an AI supercycle.
Rapid Growth inAMD’s AI Chip Revenue
Su predicts that by the end of 2024, AMD could generate $4.5 billion in revenue solely from its MI300 chips. This forecast significantly surpasses AMD’s AI-related chip revenue of approximately $100 million last year and even exceedsthe company’s initial expectations of $4 billion in MI300 sales this year.
Su added, We believe we can make very significant progress in both the training and inference of these large language models.
AMD’s aggressive push into the AI market signifies a growing competition in the space. Withits ambitious roadmap and rapid revenue growth projections, AMD is poised to become a major player in the AI chip landscape.
