Apple’s U.S. Mac Shipments Remain Flat in Q2 2024

By Malcolm Owen | September 25, 2024

Apple’s Mac shipments in the United States saw minimal growth in the second quarter of 2024, with analysts noting a slight increase that failed to match the expansion rates of its competitors in the PC market.

Market Overview:

Despite experiencing growth in its Mac business on a global scale, Apple’s performance in the U.S. market was significantly more subdued. According to a Canalys report on Q2 2024 PC and notebook shipments, Apple shipped approximately 2.32 million Mac units. This figure represents a marginal improvement from the 2.31 million units shipped in Q2 2023, translating to a year-on-year growth of just 0.5%.

The overall U.S. market for PC shipments, however, saw a more robust growth rate of 3.7%, totaling over 18.8 million units for Q2 2024. This discrepancy in growth rates resulted in a decrease in Apple’s market share, dropping from 12.7% in Q2 2023 to 12.3% in Q2 2024. Apple now holds the fourth position among PC vendors in the U.S., trailing behind HP, Dell, and Lenovo.

Global Perspective:

On a global level, Apple’s Mac shipments grew by 6% year-on-year to reach 5.51 million units in Q2 2024. This growth pushed Apple’s market share to 8.8% worldwide.

Possible Reasons for Flat Growth:

The Canalys report does not provide specific reasons for Apple’s flat growth in the U.S., but it is widely speculated that consumers are holding off on purchases in anticipation of new product updates. Apple last updated its MacBook Pro in November and introduced a new iMac in the same period. The year 2024 saw the refresh of the MacBook Air, while the release of new M4-powered Mac models is rumored to be scheduled for October.

Market Leaders and Future Projections:

The U.S. market continues to be dominated by HP, which shipped 5.01 million units in Q2 2024, representing a 3.7% annual growth rate and a 26.5% market share. Dell followed with 4.53 million units, despite a 5.8% annual decline, holding a 24% market share. Lenovo secured the third position with 3.25 million shipments, a 7.7% growth, and a 17.2% market share.

Looking ahead, the U.S. market is projected to see a total of 69.69 million shipments in 2024, a 6% increase from 2023. For 2025, the market is expected to grow by another 6.2%, reaching 73.98 million units.

Consumer and Commercial Segments:

The report also indicates that consumer shipments have remained largely stagnant in 2024, with an anticipated growth rate of just 0.6%. In contrast, shipments to commercial customers are expected to rise by 8.5%, with government and education shipments seeing increases of 12.9% and 10%, respectively.

Conclusion:

Apple’s Mac shipments in the U.S. have failed to keep pace with the overall market growth, signaling potential challenges in the domestic market. The company may need to introduce compelling updates and promotions to reinvigorate consumer interest in its Mac lineup.
