The 2024 National Youth Canoeing U-Series League, an esteemed national-level canoeing competition hosted by the General Administration of Sport of China and the Chinese Canoe Association, concluded in Qian’an City, Hebei Province. Among the standout performers was a 9-year-old girl from Chengdu, Chen Xiang’ai, who emerged victorious with an impressive collection of 5 gold and 1 silver medals.
Chen Xiang’ai, a student at Yan Dao Street Foreign Language School in Chengdu, showcased her exceptional skills across multiple events. In the U9大众青少年组, she dominated the women’s single ocean canoe events, securing gold medals in the 200-meter, 1000-meter, and junior canoe 200-meter, 500-meter, and 1000-meter categories. She also claimed the silver medal in the women’s single ocean canoe 500-meter event.
This victory marks Chen Xiang’ai’s fourth consecutive participation in the league, where she has consistently ranked first among the U9 female athletes in the Chinese Canoe Association. Her dedication and perseverance were evident in the Chengdu station competition on August 16, where she faced intense competition and ultimately triumphed with a 0.4-second advantage in the 1000-meter final.
After the competition, Chen Xiang’ai’s coaching team from the Chengdu Langsu Club developed a focused training plan for her. Despite the extreme heat warnings in Chengdu in early September, Chen Xiang’ai continued to train tirelessly, ultimately emerging as a standout performer in Qian’an with her 5 gold and 1 silver medals.
The National Youth Canoeing U-Series League, which covers the age groups of U9, U12, U15, and U18, includes both professional and mass youth groups. The events are designed to mimic the Olympic static water canoeing events, with distances of 200 meters, 500 meters, and 1000 meters for solo races, as well as the 200-meter family tandem canoe and K-boat skill challenge races.
The success of the 2024 league is a testament to the rigorous training and commitment of the young athletes. With the league’s final event scheduled to take place in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province in November, it is expected that the competition will continue to serve as a platform for nurturing talent for China’s Olympic canoeing team.
Chen Xiang’ai’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. Her exceptional performance has garnered attention both within China and internationally, highlighting the potential of young canoeists in the country. As China continues to invest in its sports programs, events like the National Youth Canoeing U-Series League play a crucial role in identifying and developing future champions.
The conclusion of the 2024 National Youth Canoeing U-Series League marks the end of a highly competitive season, but it also serves as a springboard for the young athletes to continue their journey towards achieving their Olympic dreams. Chen Xiang’ai’s remarkable performance is a shining example of the dedication and hard work required to excel in the world of sports, and her story will undoubtedly inspire many young canoeists to pursue their passions and aspirations.
