Mutual Respect Key to Korea-China Relations, Says Korean Ambassador

Beijing,September 25, 2024 – The importance of mutual respectin navigating the complexities of the Korea-China relationship was underscored by Korean Ambassador to China, Jeong Jae-ho, at a reception celebrating the Republic of Korea’sNational Foundation Day and Armed Forces Day.

Speaking at the reception held at the Korean Embassy in Beijing, Ambassador Jeong emphasized that even in the face of challenges,both countries should maintain a respectful stance and open communication channels. He highlighted the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, emphasizing that the foundation of their partnership rests on mutual respect.

We need to pay careful attentionand make continuous efforts to nurture this relationship. Even when facing difficulties, we must keep the lines of communication open, said Ambassador Jeong.

He also highlighted the consistent high-level exchanges between Korea and China, citing the leaders’ meeting during the 2022 G20 summit in Indonesia, the meeting between Korean Prime Minister Han Deok-soo and Chinese President Xi Jinping in September 2023, and the meeting between President Yoon Suk-yeol and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in May 2024.

Echoing the sentiment of mutual respect, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, representing the Chinese government at the reception, acknowledged the recent challenges in bilateral relations but stressed the unwavering commitment to friendly cooperation.

Despite some twists and turns in recent years, the overarching direction of China-Korea friendly cooperation remains unchanged and cannot be altered, said Vice Minister Sun.Both countries have never stopped their efforts to improve and develop our relationship. China is willing to continue to work with Korea, with an open and inclusive attitude, to expand cooperation, deepen exchanges, achieve mutual success, and jointly develop, bringing tangible benefits to our peoples.

Approximately 1,000 guests attended the reception, including representatives from diplomatic missions, military attachés, and Korean residents in China.

The reception comes amidst a period of heightened attention on the Korea-China relationship. While both countries have expressed a commitment to strengthening ties, recent tensions over issues like North Korea’s nuclear program and trade disputes have created challenges.

Ambassador Jeong’s emphasis on mutual respect underscores the importance of dialogue and understanding in overcoming these challenges. Both sides have acknowledged the need for continued high-level engagement to maintain stability and foster cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange.

The reception served as a platform to reaffirm the importance ofthe Korea-China relationship and to emphasize the shared desire for a future marked by mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation.
