Ren Jianxin, Former Top Chinese Legal Official, Dies at 99
BEIJING – Ren Jianxin, a prominent figure in China’s legalsystem and a former top official in the Communist Party, died on September 21, 2024, at the age of 99.His body was cremated on September 25 at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing.
Ren served as a member of the Secretariat of the14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the former Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, the former Vice Chairman of the 9th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and the formerPresident of the Supreme People’s Court. He was widely recognized as a leading figure in China’s legal reforms and played a significant role in shaping the country’s legal system.
Ren’s passing was mourned by top Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and other members of the Politburo Standing Committee. They visited the hospital to express their condolences or sent messages of sympathy to Ren’s family.
On September 25, a solemn ceremony was held at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery. The hall was draped inblack with a white banner reading In Deep Mourning for Comrade Ren Jianxin. Ren’s portrait was placed below the banner, and his body lay in state amidst flowers and cypress trees, covered with the red flag of the Communist Party of China.
At 9:30 AM, Xi Jinping, Li Qiang,Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi, and Han Zheng, among other high-ranking officials, arrived at the hall. They stood in silent tribute before Ren’s body, bowed three times, and offered their condolences to his family.
Other party and state leaders alsoexpressed their condolences through various means. Officials from central and state agencies, Ren’s former colleagues, and representatives from his hometown also attended the farewell ceremony.
Ren Jianxin was born in 1925 and joined the Communist Party in 1945. He dedicated his life to the legal profession and servedin various positions within the party and government. He was known for his strong commitment to upholding the law and his dedication to promoting social justice.
His passing marks the end of an era for China’s legal system. Ren’s contributions to the development of China’s legal framework and his dedication to upholding the rule of lawwill be remembered for generations to come.
