Two years ago, the West Kyushu Shinkansen, a vital link connecting Nagasaki Station and the Saga Prefecture’s Takeo Onsen Station over a 66-kilometer stretch, revolutionized regional travel. To mark this significant milestone, the Japan Railways (JR) Kyushu held a special cleaning event for one of its iconic trains, the Seagull, on September 21 at the Omura Depot in Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

A Symbol of Progress Gets a Facelift

The Seagull train, which has been in service since the line’s opening, received a thorough cleaning to celebrate the anniversary. The event attracted a overwhelming response, with 5,167 people applying to participate. From this pool, approximately 180 volunteers were selected to help in the cleaning process.

Equipped with deck brushes and other cleaning tools, the volunteers meticulously removed grime from the train’s windows, doors, and lighting fixtures. The enthusiasm and dedication of the participants were evident, with each person contributing to the train’s transformation.

A woman in her 40s from Sasebo City expressed her joy at the renewed appearance of the train. The vehicle is now spotless, and I’m very happy. I hope the ‘Seagull’ can glide smoothly and swiftly across the tracks, she said.

A fourth-grade boy from Kagoshima Prefecture also shared his experience. I cleaned the driver’s seat thoroughly to ensure the train can run safely without any accidents, he explained, highlighting the importance of safety and maintenance.

The cleaning event was not just a renewal of the train but also a celebration of the line’s success. JR Kyushu President Kogure Yoji commented on the positive growth. The number of passengers on the West Kyushu Shinkansen has been increasing steadily. I believe we’ve had two wonderful years, he said.
