Microsoft is taking steps to increase transparency in how its Copilot generative AI assistant accesses information from the internet. Starting in October, Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot users will see specific web search queries used to generate their text prompts in the link citations section. Additionally, from today, users will also be able to see the specific websites accessed to answer the questions they input into Copilot.

In a blog post, Microsoft announced that these changes will provide users with valuable feedback, allowing them to understand precisely how their prompts are used to generate web queries and send them to Bing for search. This increased transparency is designed to help users refine their prompts and use Copilot more effectively.

Furthermore, starting in the fourth quarter of 2024, company administrators will be able to access and search through the web search query records for Copilot usage. This means administrators will be able to review the web searches used to retrieve answers from employees’ Copilot text prompts.

Administrators can already audit prompts and responses, and will now be able to extend these operations to search queries using familiar tools. Providing transparency for web queries supports Microsoft’s mission to build a trustworthy AI, as customers can confirm that the information Copilot searches for is relevant and appropriate.

This move comes after Microsoft recently rolled out a series of new features for Copilot users earlier this month. These included the ability to create automatic Copilot agents in Copilot Studio, a new Copilot Pages experience, and enhanced data protection features for users working or studying with Copilot.

By enhancing transparency, Microsoft aims to build user trust and ensure that Copilot is used responsibly and effectively. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the use of AI technologies.

This update is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to make Copilot a more reliable and user-friendly tool for professionals and students. By providing detailed insights into how Copilot accesses and uses internet information, Microsoft is setting a new standard for AI transparency in the tech industry.
