Haikou, August 24 (Xinhua) – The Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park (HTWP) celebrated the 11th birthday of its belovedpanda twins, Gonggong and Shunshun, on August 24th. The event was a lively affair, with locals gathering to shower the Sichuan-born “celebrity pandas” with birthday wishes.

At 10:00 am, the panda twins made their grand entrance, drawing a large crowd to the HTWP’s panda world. The panda keepers had prepared a lavish11th birthday feast for Gonggong and Shunshun, combining traditional Hainan culture and cuisine. The delicious spread quickly lured the panda twins into a “feasting frenzy,” delighting the crowd.

“Gonggong and Shunshun love to eat golden bamboo and bamboo shoots,” said Wang Cheng’en, a third-grade student from Dongshan Central Primary School in Haikou, who served as a science explainer for the day. He shared that he has been following Gonggong and Shunshun since he was six years old, and is thrilled to see them grow bigger and stronger. He expressed his hope to educatemore people about the Hainan panda twins through his explanations.

Wang, a panda fan, first met Gonggong and Shunshun in early 2018 and has been following their growth ever since. On this special day, she wore a themed T-shirt that read “Hainan Island Master” toexpress her birthday wishes for the panda twins. She noted that Gonggong and Shunshun have won the hearts of countless “panda fans” both domestically and internationally with their lively personalities and endearing antics, such as “Gonggong grilling skewers” and “Shunshun sailing on a little red boat.” Fans have spontaneouslypromoted the panda twins, designing badges, keychains, and other creative products that have gained immense popularity.

The HTWP also organized a series of enriching activities for the day, including panda-themed craft workshops, nature observation tours, and a chance to taste the same fruit skewers enjoyed by the pandas. Gonggong and Shunshun were born at the Bifengxia Base of theChina Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Ya’an, Sichuan. Their birthdays are August 18th and August 27th, 2013, respectively. On November 25th, 2018, the HTWP’s panda world officially opened, finally bringing pandas toHainan Island.
