Utrecht, Netherlands – The municipality ofUtrecht is embarking on an ambitious project to create a brand new neighborhood in the Rijnenburg polder, a move that promises to significantly expand the city’sfootprint and create a thriving community. The plans, unveiled this week, outline a vision for a neighborhood that will accommodate between 23,000 and 25,000 residents and provide 12,500 workspaces.
The development, which is expected to begin construction in 2035, will transform the Rijnenburg polder into a vibrant and sustainableurban center. The municipality envisions a neighborhood that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, offering a blend of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces.
In the Rijnenburg polder, there is room for sustainable energy, nature,new walking and cycling routes, and opportunities for sports, said a statement from the municipality of Utrecht. After 2035, a new complete district can be built.
The new neighborhood will boast a wide range of amenities, including schools, healthcare facilities, sports facilities, shops, and ample green spaces for recreation. The municipality is committed to creating a community that prioritizes sustainability and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
To ensure transparency and community engagement, the municipality is hosting information evenings on October 1st and 3rd, providing residents with the opportunity to learn more about the plans and voice their concerns.
Beyond the new neighborhood, the municipality is also investing in infrastructure improvements and sustainable energy initiatives in the Rijnenburg polder.
Plans are underway to expand the Nedereidse park, creating more space for relaxation, cycling, walking, and sports activities. The municipality is collaborating with neighboring municipalities and organizations to ensure a cohesive approach topark development.
In a bid to promote renewable energy, Utrecht is planning to build four wind turbines in the Rijnenburg polder in the coming years, partnering with Rijne Energie. The city is also exploring the feasibility of installing solar panels and harnessing geothermal energy in the area.
To accommodate the increased energydemand, grid operator Stedin is expanding its electricity substation in Rijnenburg. Additionally, Utrecht is working with TenneT on plans to construct a new electricity substation in the area.
