Seattle, Washington – September 20, 2024 –Microsoft is set to introduce a new feature in its Edge browser that will help users identify extensions that are negatively impacting their browsing experience. The Extension Performance Detectorwill analyze the performance of installed extensions and alert users to any that are significantly slowing down their browsing or impacting their computer’s overall performance.
The announcementwas made through Microsoft’s official Windows Blogs platform. The new feature will be rolled out to a select group of users through the Edge Canary 130 build. This early access version of Edge allows users to test new features before they arereleased to the public.
We understand that extensions can be incredibly useful for enhancing browsing experiences, but sometimes they can also be a drain on system resources, said a Microsoft spokesperson. With the Extension Performance Detector, we aim toempower users to identify and manage extensions that are impacting their browsing performance.
The new feature will continuously monitor the performance of installed extensions and identify those that are causing noticeable and persistent performance issues. When an extension is identified as a potential culprit, Edge will display a Speed Slowdown notification to the user. Clicking onthe notification will provide users with more information about the specific extension, including its impact on page loading times. Users will also have the option to disable the extension directly from the notification.
To access the Extension Performance Detector feature, users can navigate to edge://flags/#edge-performance-extension-detection
in their EdgeCanary 130 browser and enable the feature. After enabling the feature, users will need to restart their browser for the changes to take effect.
The introduction of the Extension Performance Detector is a welcome addition to Edge’s suite of performance-enhancing features. It addresses a common concern among users who rely on extensionsto enhance their browsing experience but are often unaware of the potential performance impact of these add-ons.
This feature is particularly relevant given the increasing popularity of Chromium-based browsers, which are known for their support of a wide range of extensions. While extensions can be beneficial, they can also consume significant system resources, leading to slowdowns and other performance issues.
Microsoft’s initiative to provide users with greater control over their browsing experience is a positive step towards creating a more efficient and enjoyable web browsing environment. The Extension Performance Detector is expected to be rolled out to all Edge users in the coming months.
