Jeju Students to Visit Nanjing and Shanghai for Educational Exchange
JEJU, SouthKorea – A delegation of 19 students and accompanying teachers from Jeju Islandwill visit Nanjing and Shanghai from September 20 to 24, as part of an educational exchange program aimed at fostering peace education and strengthening ties with China.
The visit, announced by the Jeju Provincial Office of Education on September 19, is part of a broader collaboration with the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Educationin China. The two education authorities are working together to develop and deliver peace education curricula.
The Jeju delegation will participate in a range of activities during their visit. On September 20, they will visit the Nanjing Foreign LanguageSchool, Southern New City Campus, to observe teaching methods. They will then proceed to the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education to sign a formal education cooperation agreement. The day will conclude with a cultural exchange event focused on peace education, bringing together students fromboth Jeju and Nanjing.
The following day, students from both regions will jointly visit the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, where they will participate in a historical lecture and learn about the Nanjing Massacre and the Jeju April 3rd Incident. The event will provide a platform for open discussions on these historical events and their impact on theregion.
The delegation will then travel to Shanghai, where they will visit the former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and the Yoon Bong-gil Memorial Hall. These visits aim to inspire patriotism and commemorate the sacrifices made by Korean independence fighters during the Japanese colonial period.
Kim Kwang-soo, thesuperintendent of Jeju Provincial Office of Education, expressed his hope that the exchange program, launched in December 2023, will contribute to a deeper understanding of the Jeju April 3rd Incident and the Nanjing Massacre among students from both regions. He believes that this shared knowledge will play a crucial role in promoting peaceand stability in East Asia.
The Jeju April 3rd Incident, also known as the Jeju Massacre, was a brutal crackdown on a civilian uprising on Jeju Island in 1948. The incident, sparked by opposition to the US military government’s election, resulted in the deaths of thousands ofinnocent civilians.
The exchange program represents a significant step in fostering educational cooperation and cultural understanding between South Korea and China. By sharing historical experiences and promoting peace education, the program aims to build bridges between the two nations and contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious East Asia.
