Beijing, September 19, 2024 – A delegation of South Korean parliamentarians from the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship Group met with Chinese National People’s Congress (NPC) Chairman Zhao Leji at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday morning.
During the meeting, Zhao Leji emphasized the strong and enduring bonds between China and South Korea, describing the two nations as irreplaceable neighbors and indissoluble cooperative partners. He highlighted that the healthy and stable development of China-South Korea relations is in the mutual interest of both countries and contributes to regional peace, security, and prosperity.
Zhao expressed his hope that the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship Group, an important player in promoting China-South Korea relations, would actively contribute to fostering friendly exchanges and deepening practical cooperation between the two countries.
The delegation, led by Kim Tai-yeon, the president of the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship Group and a member of the Democratic Party, expressed its gratitude for Zhao’s contributions to advancing practical cooperation between China and South Korea. Kim mentioned that South Korean Parliament Speaker Yoo Eon-cheol is considering a visit to China to further boost the friendly relations between the two countries. If the visit materializes, Yoo is willing to engage in in-depth discussions with Zhao on various cooperation issues between China and South Korea.
The delegation, consisting of over a dozen members of the South Korean National Assembly, arrived in China on Monday for a three-day official visit. During their stay, they plan to hold talks with the China-Korea Friendship Group of the NPC to discuss proposals for strengthening bilateral diplomatic relations and promoting parliamentary exchanges and cooperation.
Before their meeting with Zhao, the delegation had already met with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The delegation members include Kim Tai-yeon, the president of the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship Group; Kim Seung-yeon, the first vice-president and a member of the National Power Party; Park Jeong-sik, the permanent vice-president and a member of the Democratic Party; Hong Chi-won, the secretary-general and a member of the Democratic Party; and other members from various parties, including Yun Sang-hyun, Chae Jong-do from the National Power Party, Chen Shin-mei, Meng Sheng-kui, and Zheng Tai-hao from the Democratic Party, and Kim Kun-heng from the Motherland Renewal Party.
The meeting between the South Korean parliamentary delegation and Chinese NPC Chairman Zhao Leji underscores the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in the context of the China-South Korea relationship. It reflects the commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral ties and deepen cooperation in various fields. As the two countries continue to navigate the complexities of the international landscape, such interactions are crucial for maintaining a constructive and forward-looking relationship.
