The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China has initiated a public consultation on the revision of the mandatory national standard for Car Radio Reception System. The consultation aims to enhance the system’s ability to provide critical safety information to the public during emergencies, particularly in the wake of natural disasters and other emergencies.

According to IT Home, a leading technology news website, the MIIT has highlighted the importance of the car radio reception system as a crucial infrastructure for ensuring the rapid and effective dissemination of authoritative emergency information during sudden emergencies. The system’s unique advantage lies in its capability to proactively disseminate information about sudden natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods, as well as other safety alerts.

The coverage radius of the FM broadcast transmitters exceeds 100 kilometers, while the coverage distance of medium-wave radio stations can reach up to 1,000 kilometers. Given the considerable distance between the transmitters and car occupants, the likelihood of both being affected by the same disaster is relatively low. In contrast, the wireless transmission distance between 2G/3G/4G/5G cellular reception terminals and base stations ranges from a few hundred meters to several kilometers. This makes the possibility of both the car occupants and the base stations being affected by a disaster simultaneously quite high.

Therefore, when cellular base stations are damaged due to sudden emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, or typhoons, the wireless broadcast reception system in vehicles will play a critical role. Establishing relevant standards for car radio reception systems is of great significance.

The MIIT has revealed that the National Committee of Standardization for Automotive Electronics and Electromagnetic Compatibility (SAC/TC114/SC29), under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, has organized the industry to develop two recommended national standards for car audio and video systems. These standards include requirements for car radio reception terminals, specifically GB/T 22630-2008 Electromagnetic Compatibility Requirements and Measurement Methods for Car Audio and Video Equipment and GB/T 26775-2011 General Technical Conditions for Car Audio and Video Systems.

However, it is worth noting that there is currently no mandatory national standard for car radio reception terminals in China. The public consultation launched by the MIIT aims to address this gap by revising the existing standards to better meet the needs of the public in emergency situations.

The car radio reception system has the potential to cover up to 1,000 kilometers, making it an effective tool for disseminating safety information to a wide range of areas. This capability is particularly crucial in the event of a disaster that affects a large area, such as an earthquake or a flood.
