SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean President尹锡悦 emphasized the urgency of resolving inter-Korean family reunification issues during a speech delivered on the second anniversary of the designated Displaced Families Day, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency.
Despite the ongoing impasse in humanitarian exchanges with North Korea, President尹锡悦 expressed his commitment to seeking out and advancing all possible measures within reach. He highlighted the distressing fact that over 130,000 individuals who have applied to participate in reunification activities have passed away without ever being able to reunite with their families. This figure includes more than 3,000 people each year.
In his address, President尹锡悦 also mentioned the expansion of a survey on displaced families from North America to other regions worldwide. South Korea plans to continue advocating for international attention to the issue of displaced families on various international platforms, including the United Nations, and to strengthen cooperation in this matter.
Displaced Families Day, designated by the South Korean government, aims to foster national consensus on resolving the issue of displaced families and to provide comfort to those affected by the pain of separation. The Displaced Families Reunification and Promotion Act, which came into effect last March, stipulates that the two days before Mid-Autumn Festival, traditionally celebrated in September, be observed as Displaced Families Day.
During the second Displaced Families Day commemorative ceremony, South Korea’s Minister of Unification, Kim Yeon-ho, read President尹锡悦’s written speech at the KBS Art Hall. The President’s message underscores the human cost of the ongoing separation between families on the Korean Peninsula, with many losing hope and their lives before ever being able to reunite.
