CAPE CANAVERAL,FLORIDA – A SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying four private astronauts successfully splashed down off the coast ofFlorida on September 15, marking the culmination of a historic mission that included the first-ever private spacewalk.
The mission, dubbed PolarisDawn, was spearheaded by Jared Isaacman, founder of the IT company Shift4 Payments, who led a crew of three other private astronauts: Scott Poteet, aformer US Air Force pilot and Shift4 Payments executive; Dr. Sian Proctor, a geoscientist and science communicator; and Dr. Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant and cancer survivor.
The Dragon capsule launched fromNASA’s Kennedy Space Center on September 10, embarking on a journey that would see the crew spend several days in orbit, conducting scientific experiments and testing new technologies. The mission’s highlight, however, was the unprecedented spacewalkconducted on September 12.
Isaacman and Poteet, both wearing SpaceX-designed spacesuits, ventured outside the Dragon capsule, becoming the first private astronauts to perform a spacewalk. This groundbreaking event signifies a significant step towards greater accessibility to space for private individuals and companies.
The spacewalk was conductedat an altitude of approximately 360 miles above Earth, with the astronauts spending about four hours outside the capsule. They conducted a variety of tasks, including testing a new spacesuit prototype and deploying a small satellite.
Following the successful completion of the spacewalk and other mission objectives, the Dragon capsule began its descentback to Earth on September 15. The capsule re-entered the atmosphere at a high speed, generating intense heat, before deploying parachutes to slow its descent. The capsule landed safely in the Atlantic Ocean, where it was retrieved by a SpaceX recovery vessel.
Upon the capsule’s opening, the four astronautsemerged, greeted by cheers and applause from the recovery team. They were visibly elated, having accomplished a mission that pushed the boundaries of private space exploration.
This mission has been a dream come true, said Isaacman, beaming as he stepped out of the capsule. We’ve proven that private individuals can achieveincredible things in space, and we’re just getting started.
The Polaris Dawn mission is part of a larger initiative by Isaacman and his team to further advance private space exploration. They have plans for future missions, including a planned lunar flyby, that will continue to push the limits of human spaceflight.
