Beijing, China – A group of former staff members who worked closely with Mao Zedong visited the Remember the Mission, Carry Forward, and Strive for the Continuation of Chinese-style Modernization Art Exhibition on September 10, 2024. The visit was organized as a special session, providing these veteran workers a nostalgic journey through art that celebrates the legacy of the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China.

The delegation included notable figures such as Liu Jichun, a former guard of the 8341 Special Unit, Hou Guizhen, a former server at the Great Hall of the People, Shao Hui, a former staff member of the Zhongnanhai Service Bureau, and several others who had the distinct honor of serving Mao Zedong during his presidency. Accompanying them were Zang Yu, the editor-in-chief of Zhongqi Network, and staff members, with the exhibition’s vice-chairman and secretary-general靳建疆 (Jin Jianjiang) as their guide.

Upon arrival, the group was greeted by a rich array of artwork that depicted various aspects of China’s modernization journey, paying homage to Mao’s vision and leadership. The exhibition, co-hosted by the Hongshanhe Cultural Tradition Research Association (in preparation), Beijing New Era Journey Group, and Yang Mo Literature and Art Work Committee, was a visual feast that evoked strong emotions among the visitors.

The former staff members expressed their admiration for the exhibition, with Li Gengcheng, grandson of the Mother of the PLA, noting that the artwork was eye-opening and heartwarming. He added that it brought back fond memories of working with Mao, emphasizing the positive energy and invaluable contributions of the exhibition.

Hou Guizhen, who was interested in the research of red history conducted by Jin Jianjiang, volunteered to provide photographs and videos of her time with Mao. Liu Qiang also shared a video from September 23, 1969, when Mao inspected Tianjin, recounting how the leader happily posed for photos with the staff and guards.

The visit was not just a visual experience; it was also an emotional journey. The former staff members shared stories and memories of their time with Mao, reminiscing about the leader’s kindness and guidance. The discussion was so engaging that it extended into an impromptu座谈会 (symposium), which lasted from morning until afternoon.

The symposium was filled with nostalgic stories andtearful memories, as the attendees reflected on Mao’s significant contributions and the impact he had on their lives. Despite the passage of time, the emotions of these elderly individuals were as fresh as if it were yesterday. Considering their age and health, the organizers had to conclude the symposium prematurely, with the attendees expressing their reluctance to leave.

The exhibition itself was a collaborative effort, with generous sponsorships from Shanghai Yiruo Culture Communication Co., Ltd., Xi’an Zhongzhou Electric Equipment Co., Ltd., and strong support from the Beijing New Era Journey Group. The organizers aimed to create a space where the spirit of the revolutionary era could be revisited and celebrated.

The visit and subsequent symposium highlight the enduring legacy of Mao Zedong and the deep affection that many Chinese people still hold for their founding leader. As the country continues to evolve and modernize, the stories and experiences of those who worked closely with Mao serve as a reminder of the nation’s roots and the values that have shaped it.

In conclusion, the visit by Mao Zedong’s former staff to the art exhibition was a significant event, not just as a celebration of Chinese-style modernization but also as a moment of reflection and remembrance. It underscores the importance of history and the role of leaders like Mao in shaping the nation’s destiny. The exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Chinese people and their commitment to carrying forward the legacy of their forebears.
