Redmond, Washington – In a move that signals a significant shift in its leadership structure, Microsoft hasappointed Carolina Dybeck Happe as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). This newly created position will see Happe report directly to CEO Satya Nadella as a member of the senior leadership team.

Happe joins Microsoft from General Electric (GE), where she served as Chief Financial Officer for four years. Duringher tenure, she oversaw the successful split of GE into three publicly traded companies. Nadella, in a blog post announcing the appointment, lauded Happe as a global business leader and praised her proven ability to drive large-scaletransformational change, improve customer experience, and accelerate value realization.

Carolina will partner with the SLT to help us drive continuous improvement across all of our organizations, accelerate our company-wide AI transformation, and enhance value for our customersand partners, Nadella wrote.

Happe’s responsibilities will encompass several key departments within Microsoft, including the Cloud + AI Business + Ecosystem organization, the Microsoft Digital organization for Experiences + Devices, and the Microsoft Business Operations organization for Finance.

The COO position has been vacant at Microsoft for several years, with the last incumbent being Kevin Turner, who held the role from 2005 to 2016. Turner’s departure came amidst the transition from former CEO Steve Balmer to Nadella.

Happe’s appointment marks a significant change for Microsoft, as she is an outsider brought in to leada critical role within the company.
