The plans are still subject to approval from the municipality of The Hague. Alderman Robert vanAsten, responsible for Urban Development, expressed his support for the project, stating that the pier is an important icon for Scheveningen and The Hague, with international recognition.
A History of Transformation:
The Scheveningen pier has undergone several transformations throughout its history. The original wooden pier was built in1901 and demolished by German occupiers in 1943. The current pier, located 100 meters north of the original, was opened in 1961 by Prince Bernhard.
The pier has been a popular attraction for decades, but it has also faced challenges. In2011, a fire broke out, leading to bankruptcy a year later. The structure was in a state of disrepair due to lack of maintenance. Construction company Kondor Wessels purchased the pier in 2014 and undertook a major renovation, adding a hotel and Ferris wheel. The walking pier hasbeen open to the public since 2015.
However, in 2022, the municipality warned that large parts of the pier needed immediate renovation to prevent another closure. The new plans aim to address these concerns and ensure the long-term viability of this iconic landmark.
Public Opinion andFuture:
The proposed renovation has generated interest and discussion among residents and visitors. Some welcome the plans for improved facilities and sustainability, while others express concerns about potential changes to the pier’s character.
The municipality of The Hague will now review the plans and engage with stakeholders before making a final decision. The future ofthe Scheveningen pier is likely to be shaped by the balance between preserving its heritage and adapting to the evolving needs of the city and its visitors.
