Scheveningen Pier Set for Major Renovation: A New Era for the Iconic Landmark
SCHEVENINGEN, Netherlands – The iconic Scheveningen Pier,a beloved landmark in the coastal town of Scheveningen, is set for a major renovation, promising a revitalized experience for visitors and residents alike. Project developerRE:BORN, a fellow owner of the Pier, has unveiled ambitious plans for the project, aiming to transform the structure into a modern, sustainable, and multifaceteddestination.
The renovation, expected to begin in 2026, will see the addition of a new conference center located beneath the existing Ferris wheel, which is slated to remain a prominent feature of the pier. The plans also includethe creation of an extensive spa and wellness area, promising a luxurious and rejuvenating experience for visitors.
A key element of the project is a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. RE:BORN envisions creating green areas around the pier, including a small park at the entrance to the boulevard and another park on the blow-out deck. These green spaces will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the pier while promoting a connection with nature.
The renovation will involve a phased approach, with the walking promenade scheduled to open in 2027, followed bythe reopening of the three islands above sea in 2028. The entire project is estimated to cost several dozen millions of euros, with funding already secured by RE:BORN.
The municipality of The Hague will need to approve the plans before construction can begin. Alderman Robert van Asten, responsible forUrban Development, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the pier’s significance as an icon for both Scheveningen and The Hague.
The pier is an icon for Scheveningen and The Hague with international recognition, said Van Asten. We want to keep that for the city and make it accessibleto everybody. The pier can start buzzing again.
The Scheveningen Pier has a rich history, dating back to 1901 when the first wooden pier was constructed. The current pier, built in 1961, has been a popular attraction for decades, offering stunning views of the North Seaand a variety of entertainment options.

The project is expected to significantly boost tourism and economic activity in the region, solidifying the pier’s position as a key attraction in the Netherlands.
