Sun Binhai, born in 2001 in Xingtai City, Hebei Province, lost his sight at the age of eight due to a medical condition. Despite his visual impairment, he has not let this obstacle hinder his pursuit of knowledge and success.
From the age of six, Sun Binhai attended the Beijing School for the Blind, where he learned Braille and other essential skills. Over the next 12 years, he overcame various difficulties to complete his education from elementary to high school. His dedication and hard work were evident as he achieved excellent academic results.
Inspired by a chance encounter with computer programming during his high school years, Sun Binhai decided to pursue this field further. After enrolling in the Beijing Union University’s Special Education College to study acupuncture and massage, he continued to explore computer programming as a hobby.
In 2020, at the age of 19, Sun Binhai decided to take the challenge of obtaining a computer science bachelor’s degree through self-study exams. He registered for the computer information management program at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and embarked on his self-study journey.
I am very interested in computer science and want to delve deeper into this field, Sun Binhai said. Although there are many difficulties, I am determined to pursue my dream.
As a visually impaired student, Sun Binhai faced unique challenges in his studies. Most textbooks were not available in Braille, so he had to rely on screen-reading software and electronic materials. However, he overcame these obstacles by seeking help from his family and friends.
Sun Binhai’s passion for programming grew as he progressed in his studies. Writing code is like creating a world, and it gives me a sense of control and creativity, he said. I am deeply immersed in this world and continue to discover new knowledge.
His perseverance and dedication have paid off. Sun Binhai has successfully passed four computer science self-study exams, achieved a pass in the College English Test Band 4, and won multiple awards in innovation skill competitions. In 2020 and 2021, he was awarded the National励志 Scholarship for two consecutive years.
For the future, Sun Binhai hopes to continue his academic journey by pursuing a master’s degree. I want to become an information accessibility engineer to help visually impaired people integrate into mainstream society, he said. Through code, screen readers, and online tools, I want to enable visually impaired people to change the world in their own way.
The story of Sun Binhai serves as an inspiring example of how determination and passion can overcome adversity. His journey towards his dream of becoming a programmer is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up on one’s dreams.
