Title: Venezuelan Journalists Turn to AI Avatars to Navigate Risky Reporting
In a remarkable adaptation to the repressive environment under President Nicolás Maduro’s regime, journalists in Venezuela have begun using AI-generated avatars to deliver news reports, thereby evading potential arrest for criticism. This innovative approach is part of a broader strategy to maintain free press in the face of increasing government suppression.
Connectas, a Colombian-based journalism platform, has developed AI avatars named ‘El Pana’ and ‘El Chama,’ both in their twenties and with a professional demeanor. These avatars, which are indistinguishable from human anchors, read news content generated by independent media outlets across Venezuela. Their existence is only betrayed by their slightly robotic movements and repetitive cadence.
The AI avatars are the centerpiece of ‘Operation Retweet,’ an initiative launched by Connectas in response to the escalating persecution of journalists and the imposition of an information blockade in the wake of the controversial election on July 28. The Maduro administration has been cracking down on opponents, activists, and media reporting on his regime with increased severity.
According to Connectas, journalists in Venezuela are being arrested for covering electoral events, and communications companies have been ordered to restrict the free circulation of information. On August 8, Maduro announced the ban of ‘X’ and threatened to block WhatsApp, while promoting the use of WeChat, a move that has been criticized by digital rights activists.
Carlos Eduardo Huertas, director of Connectas, emphasized that the AI avatars are not a mere novelty but a necessary response to the escalating repression faced by journalists in Venezuela. The uncertainty over the safety of doing their job grows by the minute, he stated.
The election on July 28 was marked by accusations of illegal tactics and violence, with both Maduro and his opposition rival Edmundo Gonzalez claiming victory. Despite the country’s electoral authority declaring Maduro the winner with 51% of the vote, independent exit polls contradicted this result.
The Maduro regime has intensified its efforts to suppress dissent and maintain control since the election. The use of AI avatars by journalists is a testament to the resilience of the media in the face of adversity. As Maduro’s regime continues to restrict information and silence criticism, these AI-generated anchors serve as a vital lifeline for Venezuelans seeking accurate and independent news.
