Passengers to Face Delays Due to Public Transport Strikes in the Netherlands
Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 9, 2024
Passengers across the Netherlands can anticipate significant disruptions to their travel schedules as public transport strikes are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, according to reports from Dutch national railway NS and other transport authorities.
The strikes are set to impact services across the country, with the NS reporting that they cannot yet confirm the extent of the disruptions that passengers can expect on Wednesday. Workers, including those from regional transport providers, are planning to walk off the job for a total of four hours, starting at 4 a.m.
A notice has been issued at Amsterdam Centraal Station, warning passengers not to board trains, highlighting the potential for delays and cancellations. NS has previously advised passengers to prepare for such issues, noting that it takes time for the full operational schedule to be restored after work stoppages.
Joining the NS in the strike will be employees from public transport companies in Amsterdam (GVB), The Hague (HTM), and Rotterdam (RET), who will also participate in the action for a better, permanent early retirement scheme. Additionally, police officers have conducted their own strikes in recent weeks, and cleaning crews at Schiphol Airport participated in a strike on Monday.
The strike is expected to bring nearly all regional buses, trams, and trains to a standstill on Wednesday morning. Transport companies including Arriva, Connexxion, EBS, Hermes, Keolis, Qbuzz, and Transdev will see their timetables largely cancelled from 4 a.m. Services are expected to gradually resume from 8 a.m., with full restoration anticipated by noon in Amsterdam, 11 a.m. in Rotterdam, and around 9:30 a.m. in The Hague.
Passengers using these services should anticipate delays and potential cancellations even after 8 a.m., as the full operational schedule is gradually restored. The GVB, HTM, and RET have provided rough estimates for when service is expected to return to normal, emphasizing the time it takes for all vehicles to be in the correct positions.
The strikes are part of a broader labor action across the Netherlands, with various groups pushing for improvements to their working conditions and benefits.
