Treasures Unearthed: Qin Shi Huang’s Tomb Archaeological Discoveries Unveiled in Major Exhibition

Xi’an, China – Marking the50th anniversary of the excavation of the Terracotta Army, the 50th Anniversary of the Excavation of the Terracotta Army and the International Conference onthe Protection and Research of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Site was held in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province on September 8th, 2024. Simultaneously, the exhibition The Underground Kingdom of the First Emperor: Archaeological Discoveries of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum opened its doors to the public, presenting a comprehensive showcase of archaeological findings from the tomb for thefirst time.

This exhibition serves as a valuable complement to the existing Terracotta Army Pit display. It features over 230 artifacts, carefully selected from the vast trove of discoveries made over the past 50 years. These objectsrepresent the pinnacle of archaeological achievements, offering a multi-faceted glimpse into the structure, content, and significance of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum.

Among the highlights of the exhibition are several never-before-seen artifacts, including:

  • The East Gate Ruins of the Outer City: Providing insights into the grandscale and intricate design of the mausoleum complex.
  • Remains of the Mausoleum Buildings: Revealing the architectural grandeur of the emperor’s final resting place.
  • Kuan Guan Ruins: Offering a glimpse into the intricate system of food preparation and storage within the mausoleum.
  • Artifactsfrom the Western Tomb No. 1: Shedding light on the elaborate burial practices and the wealth of the emperor’s entourage.

The exhibition is structured into eight thematic sections:

  • Qin Shi Huang: Delving into the life and reign of the First Emperor of China.
  • Li Mountain as the Mausoleum: Exploring the choice of the Li Mountain as the burial site.
  • Palace and Officials: Illustrating the intricate hierarchy and organization of the imperial court.
  • Underground Army: Showcasing the legendary Terracotta Army and its significance.
  • Royal Gardens:Revealing the beauty and opulence of the emperor’s gardens.
  • Court Entertainment: Highlighting the diverse forms of entertainment enjoyed by the Qin dynasty elite.

The exhibition features a captivating array of artifacts, including:

  • High-ranking Armored Warrior Figures: Imposing and intricatelydetailed, these figures demonstrate the military might of the Qin dynasty.
  • Stone Armor: Exquisitely crafted and heavy, these pieces provide insight into the protective gear worn by Qin soldiers.
  • Bronze Waterfowl: A unique discovery from the Qin dynasty, these artifacts showcase the artistic skill and craftsmanshipof the era.
  • Gold and Silver Musical Instruments: Elaborately decorated and showcasing the sophistication of Qin musical traditions.
  • Li Mountain Garden Bronze Bell: The first artifact to confirm the historical record of the Li Mountain Garden as the original name of the mausoleum complex.
  • The First Cauldron of the Qin Mausoleum: The largest cauldron discovered at the site, symbolizing the power and wealth of the Qin dynasty.
  • Qin Dynasty Bronze Weights: These artifacts, inscribed with the Qin dynasty’s standardized weights and measures, provide evidence of the emperor’s effortsto unify the empire.
