Kelowna, BC – September 6, 2024
In a significant development, a leading pharmaceutical company has stepped forward to secure the future of the former BC Tree Fruits property in Kelowna. NOVEM, a firm renowned for its expertise in processing and storage of agricultural products and pharmaceuticals, has taken possession of the site located on Sexsmith Road.
Emergency Lease and Purchase Offer
Colin Davidson, CEO of NOVEM, confirmed the acquisition in an exclusive phone interview with Black Press. Davidson revealed that an emergency lease has been put in place, allowing the company immediate access to the facility. Additionally, NOVEM has submitted a purchase offer for the property, which has been accepted, with the transaction contingent upon court approval.
Immediate Action to Save Harvest
Davidson emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, Saving this year’s harvest is our immediate goal. The acquisition comes in the wake of the unexpected dissolution of the BC Tree Fruit Cooperative, a landmark event that left over 300 farmers in need of alternative storage solutions for their produce.
BC Tree Fruit Cooperative Closure and Government Intervention
The closure of the cooperative, which had been a staple in the Okanagan region for nearly nine decades, led to a scramble among farmers to secure storage facilities for their fruit. The provincial government intervened to help the majority of farmers find suitable storage, but approximately 80 farms were left without options. Those who managed to sign contracts with private buyers and storage facilities often had to settle for less-than-ideal conditions.
NOVEM’s Role in Ensuring Harvest Preservation
The emergency lease of the Sexsmith Road facility by NOVEM provides a lifeline for these farmers. The specialized controlled atmosphere storage rooms at the site will be crucial for preserving the quality of the fruit until it can be processed or sold.
Media Availability Scheduled
Davidson indicated that more information will be shared during a media availability event at the property on Friday, where further details about the company’s plans and the future of the site will be disclosed.
