In a bid to enhance safety and promote pedestrian priority, YouBike has implemented a new rule set for its users. Starting July 1, riders in Taipei, New Taipei, and Taoyuan cities are now subject to a points-based system for rule violations. Additionally, members must ensure they have public bicycle injury insurance to rent YouBike 2.0E. Here’s what you need to know about the new regulations and how they affect YouBike users.

Violation Points System

The new points system is designed to encourage safe riding practices. Riders who accumulate three points within a year will face a 14-day suspension, while seven points result in a one-year suspension. In the most severe cases, such as drunk or drug driving, riders can be suspended for up to two years.

Here are some of the violations that will result in points:

  1. Running a red light
  2. Riding against traffic on the road
  3. Not yielding to pedestrians on crosswalks or pedestrian paths
  4. Riding on pavements or pedestrian paths not designated for slow-moving vehicles
  5. Using a mobile phone while riding
  6. Carrying a passenger
  7. Other violations reported by the police or other authorities

Checking Your Points

If you receive a violation notice, YouBike will send you a message informing you of the infraction and your accumulated points. You can also check your points by logging into the YouBike official app. It’s important to note that points accumulate within the same YouBike account, even if you violate the rules in different regions.

Contesting a Violation

If you believe a violation notice is incorrect, you can contest it within seven days of receiving the notice by contacting your local traffic bureau via the 1999 hotline. If the bureau confirms the mistake, your points will be revoked, and you can continue using YouBike.

Public Bicycle Injury Insurance

Another new requirement is that members must confirm whether they have public bicycle injury insurance before renting YouBike 2.0. Failure to do so will prevent you from renting YouBike 2.0E in New Taipei and Taoyuan cities, and YouBike 2.0E in Taipei.

The public bicycle injury insurance is free and can be obtained through the YouBike official app or website. Here’s how to purchase the insurance through the app:

  1. Update the app to the latest version and ensure your phone is running iOS 11.0 or Android 5.0 or higher.
  2. Log in to the app using your phone number and password.
  3. Select Public Bicycle Injury Insurance.
  4. Read the content and check the box I have read.
  5. Fill in your insurance information.
  6. Complete the purchase.

Conclusion

The new YouBike regulations aim to improve safety and encourage responsible riding. By understanding the rules and penalties, you can ensure a pleasant and safe experience while using YouBike. Always check your points, maintain public safety, and ensure you have the necessary insurance to avoid any complications.
