Seoul, September 4
The 17th Seoul Development Assistance (ODA) International Conference, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), officially commenced on September 4 at the Lotte Hotel in central Seoul.
The annual event, which has been held since 2007, brings together officials, civil society representatives, and academics from various countries to share knowledge, experiences, and discuss key issues in international development cooperation. This year’s conference is themed Sustainable Development Cooperation for Future Generations, with over 300 participants from diverse backgrounds, international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), academic circles, and the diplomatic corps in South Korea.
In her welcoming remarks, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kang In-Soon, highlighted the importance of charting a vision for development cooperation in a rapidly changing environment fraught with multiple crises. We should communicate with the future generations to understand their perspectives on development cooperation and collectively explore solutions to overcome challenges, thereby resonating with them, she stated.
OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, in his keynote speech, commended South Korea for its successful transformation from one of the poorest countries to an economic powerhouse. He noted that South Korea’s significant expansion of its development assistance budget for developing countries is playing a crucial role on the international stage.
The conference aims to leverage South Korea’s extensive experience in development cooperation. The country’s journey from poverty to prosperity serves as a valuable case study for other nations seeking to embark on similar paths. South Korea’s development aid has been instrumental in fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and enhancing governance in recipient countries.
This year’s conference sessions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including sustainable development goals, innovative financing mechanisms, and the role of technology in development cooperation. Participants will also discuss strategies to enhance the effectiveness and impact of development assistance in the face of emerging global challenges such as climate change, economic instability, and health crises.
South Korea’s commitment to development assistance is reflected in its budget allocations. The country is set to allocate a record 357 billion won for official development assistance next year, marking a significant increase from the previous year. This allocation underscores the government’s dedication to supporting global development efforts and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
The conference also provides a platform for networking and collaboration among stakeholders in the development community. It offers an opportunity for participants to forge partnerships, exchange best practices, and explore potential synergies in their development efforts.
In addition to the conference sessions, a range of side events and exhibitions are being held to showcase the achievements and ongoing projects of various organizations involved in development cooperation. These events aim to inspire and motivate participants to continue their efforts in making a positive impact on the lives of people around the world.
The 17th Seoul Development Assistance International Conference is not just a gathering of experts and policymakers; it is a testament to South Korea’s commitment to global development and its role as a responsible member of the international community. As the conference progresses, it is hoped that the discussions and outcomes will contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world for future generations.
